Basically, 1and1 Internet is a web hosting company. However, they also offer domain registration. The very basic service that they offer is the Instant Domain.

Important things you should know BEFORE YOU REGISTER.
DNS Management.
1and1's system will only allow you to edit the following DNS records:
-NS (nameserver)
-A record or IP address
-MX records
-CNAME
Any changes you made on the DNS will take 24 to 48 hours to propagate.
Subdomain name
You can create up to 5 subdomain per package. If you have several domain names under 1 Instant Domain package, you can only create up to 5 and not 5 per domain.
1&1 Webmail
You can create one mailbox type email address for your domain name per package with 2GB mailbox space. All 1and1 hosted emails are POP/IMAP enabled so you can configure it on any email client or device given the settings are correct.
Email Forwards
You can create a number of email forwards with 3 target email addresses per account. 1and1 did not specify how many you can create. So as long as you won't encounter any error, then you can create as many as you want.
URL Forwarding
1and1 provides 2 options, frame redirect and http redirect. Frame redirect is popularly known as url masking while http redirect is the standard forwarding.
Private Domain registration
1and1 allows you to hide your personal information from the WHOIS database for FREE.
1&1 WebsiteBuilder
A template-based application with 150 designs you can chose from. This will allow you to create a 5 paged website without a hosting account. You can try their demo here.
1&1 SimpleSubmission
It is an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tool which will help you submit your website to top search engines/directories and raise the sites rankings. It will resubmit your requests every after 30 days.
What i like about this application is that you don't have to insert banners to your site for this to work unlike other websites out there offering the same tool.
I owe WHW1 a good post for all their help over the years. I can attest that WHW1 hosting has been reliable for me for probably close to 10 years, and always for just $1 a month cost; Well, probably less than a $1, since I got a year for free when started. Never had any other costs. FYI, I am also a past customer of both Bluehost and 1and1 and help others that have been on those. Key word "past".

Thanks for post. I was trying to figure out what that contract was for friend's account before cancelling on 1and1. It's a weird way of indicating something.
